World Wellbeing Week: How Facilities Management Impacts Employee Happiness
The importance of employee wellbeing is increasingly being recognised as a key driver for productivity and innovation. This year, World Wellbeing Week encourages everyone to take time to look after their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. As part of this initiative, we’re looking at how facilities management can improve employee happiness by creating comfortable spaces and helping them feel supported by their employer.
Facilities management helps make workplaces more comfortable, sustainable and safe.
Facilities management is about making a workplace comfortable, sustainable and safe. In order to do this effectively, it’s important to understand the importance of each of these three elements.
- The first step in creating a comfortable work environment is ensuring that employees have access to clean water and sanitation facilities. This means providing them with drinking fountains or water coolers where they can fill up their cups on their way in and out of the office building. It also means having enough bathrooms so everyone has somewhere private to use the restroom without waiting too long or having to walk far away from their desk space.
- Safety is also essential for employee happiness: you want your people feeling safe when they’re at work! This means having adequate lighting throughout all areas inside your building; making sure exits are clearly marked; installing fire alarms in every room; providing evacuation drills every year (and sticking with them); keeping emergency contact numbers posted near phones so people know who they should call if there’s an emergency situation requiring immediate action outside normal working hours (for example).
A happy workforce is a productive workforce.
The positive impact that facilities management has on your workforce is undeniable. A happy worker is more likely to stay with your company, recommend it to others and work harder for you. Happy employees are also more creative and productive, which means they’ll come up with better ideas for improving workflows, processes and products at the office.
As we all know from personal experience, feeling good about where we spend most of our waking hours makes us feel better about everything else in life too!
The bottom line is that facilities management improves your business by making it a more pleasant place to be. The happier your employees are, the higher their performance will be. And when you’re able to get more out of them, this has a positive impact on every aspect of your business – from productivity to profit!
The benefit of a good working environment goes beyond productivity.
You might be thinking that a good working environment is all about productivity, but the benefits go beyond that. A great workplace makes people feel good about themselves, their colleagues and their work. It’s a great way to attract and retain employees who are happy in their jobs, which can help with employee retention and engagement. It can even help to reduce sickness absence.
In fact, a Gallup study found that employees in a bad working environment are 2.5 times more likely to quit their job than those who work in a good one.
Wellbeing: A Holistic Approach
Employee wellbeing goes beyond physical health. It encompasses mental and emotional factors as well. To create a truly supportive work environment, facilities management plays a crucial role in addressing the holistic wellbeing of employees.
Mental Wellbeing:
Mental health is a vital aspect of overall wellbeing. Facilities management can contribute to mental wellbeing by providing spaces that promote relaxation, focus, and creativity. Incorporating areas for meditation, quiet reflection, or even dedicated breakout rooms can offer employees a chance to recharge and find mental clarity amid their workday. Additionally, facilities management can consider factors like noise reduction, adequate lighting, and ergonomic workstations to support a positive mental state.
Emotional Wellbeing:
Employees’ emotional wellbeing greatly impacts their job satisfaction and productivity. Facilities management can contribute to emotional wellbeing by fostering a positive and inclusive work environment. By creating communal spaces that encourage social interaction and collaboration, such as comfortable breakrooms or open-plan meeting areas, employees can feel a sense of belonging and camaraderie. Facilities can also include elements of biophilic design, incorporating natural light, greenery, and access to outdoor spaces, which have been shown to enhance mood and emotional wellbeing.
Work-Life Balance:
Achieving a healthy work-life balance is essential for employee wellbeing. Facilities management can support this by offering amenities that cater to employees’ personal needs. On-site gyms, wellness rooms for nursing mothers, or flexible spaces for personal activities and hobbies demonstrate an organisation’s commitment to work-life balance. Facilities management can also play a role in providing access to natural light and views, allowing employees to connect with nature and experience a sense of rejuvenation during their workday.
Stress Reduction:
Stress in the workplace can negatively impact both physical and mental health. Facilities management can help reduce stress levels by incorporating design elements that promote relaxation and stress relief. This can include the integration of calming colors, comfortable seating areas, and spaces for physical activity or mindfulness practices. Additionally, facilities management can implement measures to optimise indoor air quality, temperature, and acoustics, all of which contribute to a more serene and stress-free work environment.
